WYSIWYG is the cumbersome but traditional acronym for "What You See Is What You Get". Introduced by
Mac Write in 1984, this is the way most word processors work today. Before WYSIWYG, word processors such as the popular WordStar did not display much formatting on screen; you had to print the document on paper to see the text as you had written it. Modern word processors, typified by the ubiquitous Microsoft Word, display a reasonably accurate facsimile of the printed document.
