EDUCATION, CULTURE, TOURISM, ECONOMIC GROWTH
and AESTHETICS=ART in the COMMUNITY.
Over decades “art” has been used to sell and purchase, to associate one with a group and to promote political and non-political agendas. Many people envision “art” as
an upper-crust privilege when in essence “art” is the foundation of mankind. Without creativity or “art” there would not be a society today. Most think that “art” is a contemporary painting hung on the wall above a matching sofa and loveseat. This is true speaking from aesthetics, but art can also be used to educate and bring about intellectual and cultural awareness, not to mention a profit, that can reinvested back into the community. According to the Webster dictionary art is defined as …….
I believe that the use of the creative arts such as the visual and performing arts, liberal arts and humanities can enhance a community by its integration in everyday growth and living.
Within this paper, I will target five points on where the “arts” can contribute heavily to the goal of producing a whole, well-rounded self-containing community. The five points are: education, culture/community pride, commerce, economic growth and aesthetics.
My audiences are those who care about civic engagement, but specifically I am interested in communicating to Rockford city hall administrators, the students and staff at Rockford College, the Rockford Area Arts Council and the underserved population of Rockford, Illinois and its neighboring communities.
I will compare the town of Rockford, Illinois to the cities of Chicago, Illinois, Seattle, Washington and Louisville, Kentucky. These cities are excellent examples of how integrating the “arts” inside a community’s commerce and economic growth system, education system, cultural and regional population and city aesthetic programs can produce once struggling towns into thriving communities.
